We've been blessed with very sandy soil here at Corona del Sol, but it's a mixed blessing.
It drains beautifully so it's usable right after a rain.
But just like other Texas soils, it gets hard in a drought.
Unfortunately if you work it like other Texas soils, it gets real deep when you gallop through it, especially in the turns.
We've been working with experts on how to manage and improve the footing and will continue to do so.
We're still looking for the right materials to add to make the footing more uniform and horse friendly - and we're adding them.
Currently, when we work an area, masonry sand is being added to improve the texture and reduce the dust.
Hopefully it will also help with the tendency to get deep in the turns.
We're also working on the right management practices on when, how, and how deep to work the sandy soil, to get it the way we want for an event.
We'll keep working with the experts, so we can groom our galloping paths and arenas into the kind of footing the horses can enjoy and we can be proud of.
Stay tuned.

A brand new stadium jumping arena and a big warm up area are under way.
So far the weather has been against us, but both should be ready for the spring horse trials.
Both will have masonry sand for good footing.

Spring 2009:
| |
|
We have made substantial improvements in the footing since our inaugural event in August of 2008.
Mother Nature has helped out by giving us rain.
Last summer, when we held our inaugural event, the entire state of Texas was in a drought, and the footing everywhere was hard.
Grooming the arenas and galloping paths to smooth them without deepening the turns will be an ongoing project.
It is a high priority.
